Hosting and Virtual Domain
Free Hosting
The Domain Contender Free Hosting service offers 20 Megs of Web space, with unlimited subdomains and unlimited data transfers. In exchange, Domain Contender places advertisements on each of the free hosted sites. You can enroll in this service using any or all of your Domain Contender domain names, and you can also set up unlimited virtual hosts underneath each domain name. A virtual domain is a third level domain name, such as home.mydomain.com or john.mydomain.com. Each file size limit for free hosting is 200k.
Setting up Hosting
To set up your site for hosting, follow these steps:
- Log into your account and select the "Domain Manager" tab.
- Click the "Change Hosting" option (House Icon) next to the domain you wish to be hosted.
- Click on the "Change Hosting Types" link.
- Select the "Free web site" radial button and then click the "Change Hosting Type" button at the bottom of the page.
Virtual Domains
A virtual domain is an extension of your domain name. Once you have purchased "yourname.com," you can create branches of this name, such as "anything.yourname.com." These are called virtual domains.
The advantages of creating a virtual domain are that you can receive 20 megabytes of space on our server per virtual domain and it is a lot easier to direct people to various parts of your domain without having to hassle with long URLs and file extensions. To create a virtual domain you must have your domain in "Hosting" status. Once that is completed, follow these instructions:
- Log into your Domain Contender account at https://secure.domaincontender.com/myaccount.
- Click on the "Domain Manager" link.
- Click on the "Change Hosting Information" icon to the right of the domain of which you wish to create the virtual domain.
- Click on the "Add Virtual Host" link.
- Enter in the virtual domain you would like to create and then click on the "Add Virtualhost" button.
You can create as many virtual domains as you would like for each domain you have registered with Domain Contender. However, if you are using the bannerless hosting feature for the primary domain, and you wish to have bannerless hosting for the virtual domains, you will need to pay the US$15 bannerless hosting fee per virtual domain to remove the banners from those subdomains' sites.
